Chapter 2. A shared European heritage

This chapter sketches the provenance of Montessori education, from European enlightenment philosophy, via social reformers of the nineteenth century to Dr Montessori’s own development as an educator at the beginning of the twentieth century. Common reference points will be identified between the history of the ideas behind Montessori education and those that contributed to the founding of Australia as a nation.
